Travelling is one of the best things in the world, but you don’t need to be a financial expert to know that it often doesn’t come cheap. The costs of flights, trains, hotels and eating in restaurants add up quicker than you can say I’m broke in another language. Is that your wallet I can hear crying? I’ve got you! Here are some pro tips for travelling on a budget!

1. Travel in Low Season
High season doesn’t mean the place you’re travelling to is better than in off-peak seasons. It really means that you pay a lot more because everybody is travelling. Avoid summer holidays if you can. Unlock lower prices, more choice, quiet beaches, no queues at attractions and -most important- actually being able to take selfies without at least 25 strangers in them.
There is something very relaxing about travelling when other people don’t. You get a more authentic experience. The destinations feel calm and peaceful, almost relieved that they’re not raided by tourists. You have to try it!

2. Be super flexible
Not everybody has this luxury, but if you can be flexible with your travel dates and/or destination, you’ll rule the budget travel world! All you need to do is climb on your throne (read: desk chair) and search for the cheapest flights and hotel deals out there. I always use Skyscanner to compare flights.
Budget airlines like easyJet or Ryanair are great options if you know how to pack light – as in, everything in a fairly small rucksack. Yes, you might have to wear some outfits twice and you won’t get a packet of crisps on the flight, but it’s worth the savings!

3. Budget accommodation is king
Do you always get a great night’s sleep in a 5-star hotel? Is it impossible to fall asleep in a 2-star hotel? The answer is no. If you’re as busy sightseeing, taking photos and walking around exploring as we are, you can sleep anywhere! You only spend 8-10 hours asleep in your hotel room, so it might as well be a cheaper, basic, but comfortable hotel.
Websites like booking.com or Airbnb have never failed to find me budget accommodation that was more than comfortable for a restful night’s sleep, whether it’s a dorm room, hotel or bed and breakfast. Just make sure you read the reviews before you book!

4. Save on food, but not on taste
Sure, you want to try local cuisine, but do you really need to eat every meal at a restaurant? It gets expensive quickly. Shopping at local markets and shops is an adventure in itself. Find a local recipe and cook it in your apartment. It will taste even better because you’ve saved money!
Can’t cook, because you’re in a hotel room? No problem! You can still get some nice takeaways or local street food. It’s often much cheaper than eating in a restaurant, and you get some freshly cooked local food.

5. Walk or take public transport
Arrived at your destination? Get on a local bus or metro, or even better, walk! I love walking around a town or city. It’s the best way to explore a place, as you see, hear and smell everything. You can decide where you want to go, at your own pace. Try that in a taxi!
Do you want to see the highlights of a place, but you haven’t got much time? Try a guided walking tour! Just find one you like on getyourguide.com, meet your guide and enjoy the best sights and stories of the city.
